About Us

Becon is independently and privately owned and operated.  Set up in 2007 by a group of forward-thinking shareholders, all with strong waste management experience, they recognized both the commercial and environmental opportunity to reduce landfill usage by recovering up to 90% of the dry waste material generated by business enterprise.

Where local council was making a difference with residential recycling, it seemed a contradiction of terms, that the main contributors to landfill (80%) was from businesses (industrial, manufacturing, retail, building, processing, demolition), and that there was no commercially viable or environmentally sound alternative for the majority of waste than the continued use of Kate Valley Landfill.

With the investment of a $3m state of the art facility, the largest and most efficient of its kind in the southern hemisphere, Becon Canterbury was established, providing the business community with a new solution in waste management.

Becon is an initiative, committed to implementing practical and economically viable solutions to minimize waste sent to landfill.

Directors:

Richard Lloyd - Managing Director.  Former CEO of Meta NZ and Terranova, Richard is one of the leaders in New Zealand pioneering the future of waste recovery, and is passionate about minimizing the amount of commercial waste that goes to landfill.

Denis O’Rourke – a former Councillor for CCC, not much has happened in waste management in Christchurch without Denis’s involvement over the past 20 years. Spearheaded a number of major projects for the Council.
